Glass vs. plastic disco balls

Two mirror options that look alike at a glance but behave very differently in a room — a straight comparison from the people who build both.

The short answer

Choose real glass when beam quality matters and the ball hangs out of reach. Choose plastic mirror wherever glass is not allowed, such as school halls, outdoor stages and any low hang over a crowd. Both are made to your specification, both come with a free mockup within 24 hours, and both start from a minimum order of 12.

Where glass wins

Glass gives the cleaner beam and it does not dull under a hot lamp, which is why it is the classic choice for bars, venues and brand activations. The trade-off is weight: a glass ball needs a correctly rated motor, and the larger it gets the more it behaves like a suspended load that needs an engineered core and documented rigging. See custom mirror disco balls.

Where plastic wins

There are rooms where glass is simply not allowed, and plastic mirror is built for them. It weighs a fraction as much, so the motor is smaller and the rigging simpler, and it cannot hurt anyone if the worst happens. The honest trade-off is a slightly softer beam that dulls faster under a hot lamp. For outdoor use a tether point is supplied as standard. See shatterproof disco balls.

The verdict

Pick glass for the best beam in a room where the ball is out of reach.

Pick plastic for schools, outdoor events and any hang where safety matters more than the last bit of brilliance.
